On the morning of January 13, 2020, within the framework of the Workshop on computer science, machine learning and artificial intelligence organized by Vingroup Innovation Foundation VinIF, Vingroup Big Data Institute VinBDI, Professor of Harvard University , Leslie Valiant – the author of theoretical computer science, delivered a special lecture, with hundreds of young scientists, lecturers and researchers seeking answers to the question “What Needs to be Added to Machine Learning?”.
After the presentation, Professor Leslie Valiant also joined the open discussion, led by Professor Vu Ha Van (Scientific Director of Vingroup Big Data Institute – VinBDI), with the presence of Professor Duong Nguyen Vu (Director of Air Traffic Management Research Institute of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore) and Dr. Bui Hai Hung (Director of VinAI Research). At the seminar, professors discussed a number of groundbreaking studies in the fields of computer science, machine learning and artificial intelligence, as well as their impacts and prospects in developing countries including Vietnam.
Regarding Vietnam’s conditions in developing new technology applications based on information technology and mathematics such as artificial intelligence, machine learning and big data, Prof. Leslie Valiant, Prof. Duong Nguyen Vu and Dr. Bui Hai Hung said that with a large number of talented people and a wealth of research data, Vietnam had developed mathematics and great potential to create breakthroughs in this area.
Representatives of Vingroup Big Data Institute VinBDI said that inviting the world’s leading scientists to Vietnam to give lectures and presentations is part of the program which aims at promoting scientific research activities, especially in new technology field in Vietnam, in order to create opportunities for domestic scientists to enhance cooperation and pave the way for project implementation. Moreover, through the annual seminars, VinBDI hopes to contribute to inspiring, orienting and fostering Vietnam’s scientific research community to conduct short-term and long-term research projects which keep abreast with thes latest technological advances worldwide. Thus, every year VinBDI will continue to organize scientific seminars and invite some of the world’s leading scientists in different fields to Vietnam.
Regarding the future research orientation, VINBDI representative stated besides constant investment in building a shared database system for scientific research and long-term basic research tasks, in the context that Vietnam is moving into a new stage of development, taking science and technology as a competitive element, the Institute would also deploy short-term applied researches serving the community, and create technology products that can be used immediately.
Born in Hungary in 1949, Professor Leslie Valiant is considered one of the founders of machine learning theory, contributing to the foundations of artificial intelligence applications. Professor Leslie Valiant is currently working at Harvard University (USA), and a member of the Royal Society (London) and the National Academy of Sciences (USA). He is the owner of the Turing Award (A. M. Turing Award), a similar Nobel Prize in the field of Computer Science. During his career, Professor Leslie Valiant has also received many other prestigious awards such as the Nevanlinna Prize at the International Congress of Mathematicians in 1986, the Knuth Prize in 1997, the EATCS Awards in Computer Science theory in 2008.
